All About You
1. Describe your ideal house/home. Please go into as much detail as possible, and be sure to include your ideal geographical location in the description!.
Ideally (meaning if it were within my means) I would want a big house - a whimsical-looking mansion, maybe three storeys, with the outside based on Victorian architecture. On the inside, the decor would be modern - clean and white - and there would be bookshelves lining most of the walls. There would be a small backyard, with lilac trees, overgrown grass and one of those decorative stone statues.
As for the location, it would preferably be in a quieter part of a city (or in a borough near one - so that the big, bustling city-life areas are nearby, but not on my doorstep, if that makes sense).Geographically, it would be situated somewhere with warm summers and cool winters. Somewhere where the weather is often overcast or rainy. I love Europe, so for example, I could see myself living in the UK, France or Germany.
2. Imagine you’re given the classic opportunity: a genie granting you three wishes. What would you wish for? Please be as elaborate as you can. Wishing for more wishes is not permitted!
I am incredibly indecisive, so this is going to be hard. Let's see.
Wish 1: An endless supply of money. Everyone I know says that I'm extremely mercenary, and I suppose I am. Wealth is what I would start off by wishing for. It's hard for me to think of other wishes now, because in my opinion, enough money can solve anything. (Yes, I've heard "Money can't buy happiness," and to be honest, I don't believe in that.) Though I might just think that because I've never had enough money to test that theory.
Wish 2: I would wish for my family members to have long, comfortable, healthy lives. I really want the best for them. They deserve to be happy and to die when they're ready, from natural causes. Besides, my worst fear is losing my parents or brother. I want to have them around for as long as possible.
Wish 3: The disappearance and obliteration of cancer. For no type of cancer to exist in the world, in anybody, anymore. Cancer has affected so many people I know, directly or indirectly, and so much time, money and research is spent looking for a cure. I think it's pretty obvious why anyone would make this wish.
3. In your life so far, what accomplishment are you the most proud of? Why? You can list more than one if you have trouble deciding. ;)
I'm going to go ahead and say that I can't think of any specific accomplishment of mine to be proud of. I'm not saying it to be self-deprecating or modest in any way - it's just that I haven't lived that long, and haven't experienced that much, and can therefore not think of any accomplishment or achievement of mine that stands out or that I take particular pride in.
4. Which of the following is most important to you: Love, Money, Knowledge, Family, Friendship, Adventure, or Pleasure? Which is the least important to you? Please explain why for each choice.
Most important: Knowledge. I'm a big believer in "knowledge is power." The more you know, the better, in my opinion. With knowledge, you should be more able to both understand and control both events and your life. When you know more, it should theoretically be easier for you to acquire money, find pleasure, and so on. All the adult figures in my life have constantly enforced the importance of education, and that has definitely made it's mark on me. With an education you have more opportunities and a higher chance of success.
Least important: Adventure. I think that people generally only feel a keen need for adventure in books. That's not to say that I don't think it could be important for some people - it's just out of all the things on the list, it would be at the bottom for myself and probably for most of the people I know.
5. What's one quote (or passage, song lyric, etc.) that effectively describes you and your values? Explain.
"If you expect nothing from anybody, you’re never disappointed." This is from Sylvia Plath, in her book The Bell Jar.
I know this might seem like a pretty cynical quote to live by, but it's how I think and it definitely works for me. (There are probably quotes/lyrics/passages that describe myself and my values better, but I can't think of any.) If you rely on people, there is constantly the chance of being let down by them. If you don't ask anything from them, they will never disappoint you. Because the truth of it is, people will let you down when it counts (it's happened to me often enough), even if it's unintentional. I find it's easier and smarter to take care of what you have to do yourself, to be independent, rather than to expect help.
6. How do you manage your money? On that note, how important is money/financial security to you? Go into as much detail as you can.
I’m still a student living with my parents, so managing money is admittedly not something that I have the most experience with, seeing as I haven't had to support myself yet. However, I manage the money that I have very carefully. While I do sometimes splurge, I'm generally frugal (sort of stingy, to be honest , and I'm a major bargain hunter and never buy anything if it's not on sale) and I try to save as much money as possible for my future.
Financial security is very important to me. Ever since I was little, my goal in life (I know it sounds tasteless, but it's the truth) was to be rich. Now that I'm older my goal is not necessarily to be rolling in money, but to be well enough off to be financially secure, with some room for occasional luxuries. I think that just knowing that you can afford food, a home, clothes, a car, education, etc. (not necessarily those of highest quality) makes a life so much easier.
7. Name (and elaborate on) some of your hobbies. What are your favorite things to do outside of school/the office?
I read almost all the time. I love love love books, and carry one (or more) around with me everywhere I go. I'm constantly trying to slip in some reading wherever I am. I’ve always loved reading (any genre, except for maybe biographies and textbooks. But I’ll make exceptions.)
Other hobbies: I draw and write. I really like sketching - I mostly sketch people (actors, characters, singers) and I occasionally do some painting. Art is a passion of mine, and while I wish I was more talented, it’s a great and calming pass-time. As for writing, it’s almost a form of therapy for me. I write poems and thoughts on any bits of paper I can find. When I was younger I wanted to be an author, and the habit of outlining story plots and inventing characters has stayed with me. I get distracted easily, though, so I don't often finish anything.
8. Name three things you are afraid of. Explain.
1- The death of any of my family. The thought of living in a world without them terrifies me - I don't know how I would manage. I'm constantly paranoid about something happening to them.
2- Failure. Yes, I'm scared of failure (any sort - from rejection to inadequacy to defeat) and this fear often stops me from trying things that I should. If there's a risk of failure, I don't want to bother. This is something that I'm trying to get over though, pushing myself to take more chances and to not care so much.
3- Heights. (It was a toss-up between this and the dark, but my fear of heights won.) There's not much to say about this one. Just that heights scare me completely, to the point where I feel dizzy and shaky when I'm walking up (somewhat) high stairs. I have lots of dreams where I'm falling, which probably has something to do with this.
9. Name (and elaborate on) your top three BEST and top three WORST qualities (personality-related, not physical). Please answer as fully as you can, as this is an important question.
Best:
1- My dedication and determination when it comes to completing tasks. I'm a hard worker, and am able to apply myself completely when I want to.
2- I'm smart. It sounds sort of conceited when I say it (and I don't often say it, but it's true). At least, I am when it comes to subjects in school and their application in real life. I learn quickly, grasp concepts relatively easily and have a good memory. It's something that has helped me so much in life, and that I can honestly take pride in.
3- Some people might consider this a bad quality, but it works out well for me, so I don't. I'm able to treat people in ways to get them to do what I want. You could call this friendly, or you could call it manipulative. I try to be nice - I don't just play everyone - but being nice, and choosing the right words and timing and focusing on the other person's expressions and body language, can have its uses.
Worst:
1- I'm somewhat self-absorbed. It's hard for me to think of things outside the little world in my mind, and I generally put my own self-interest first without realizing I'm doing it. When it comes to other people, I'm often mistrustful and ungenerous.
2- I lie. I don't compulsively spin webs of lies, but I do drop white lies more often than I would like. It happens that I'm having conversations where I'm speaking without much thought, and then I realize that what I was saying was a twisted and misleading version of the truth. The problem is that I'm good at lying in conversations like that, so I never get caught out, and I'm worried that I'll start to do it more and more.
3- I'm too cautious and indecisive. It's very hard for me to make decisions or to really do anything with confidence.
A Song of Ice and Fire Related
1.How many books from the series have you completed?
All five of them. (And I’ve read the Dunk and Egg stories, if we’re counting those too.)
2.Who are your favorite three characters in the series? Why?
So many of the characters in ASOIAF are my favorites, so to choose I'm going to go with characters that have been some of my favorites since the beginning of the series and still are (if not, I would have to find place for Jaime, Sansa and Tyrion for sure).
1- Daenerys Targaryen. I love how she started out the series as this young, timid girl and became so strong and determined (not to mention: dragons). Another thing I love about her character is that she does not become a ruthless or cruel ruler - maybe freeing slaves wasn't the smartest decision, but it shows kindheartedness and compassion.
2- Arya Stark. I don’t know if it’s possible for any reader to dislike Arya. I always look forward to her chapters, because I find that they are usually the most interesting. She’s spirited and brave and strong, and I think her specific story is fascinating. There's not much more for me to say about her except that I love her character.
3- Jon Snow. Another obvious favourite, I suppose. I love how honorable he tries to be, and how practical and willful he is. His conscience, determination, and reasoning make him an all-around likeable character to me.
3.Who are your least favorite three characters in the series? Why?
1- Walder Frey. Who doesn’t hate Walder Frey after the Red Wedding? He's treacherous, cowardly, dishonest, selfish and overall disgusting.
2- Ramsay Bolton. Of course I hate him too. Is an explanation required? He's horribly and sickeningly savage and cruel. I don't even love to hate him, I just hate him.
3- Joffrey Baratheon. Probably another popular least favorite. All I can say is he's a vicious twisted little brat (who I at first thought was only a brat, until he went and chopped off Ned Stark's head), and that his death was a great moment.
4.#1 Favorite moment in all of ASOIAF so far? Why?
Oh man. I wish I could just say the entirety of A Storm of Swords. Actually, can I say that?
I’ll narrow it down to a couple of moments: Tyrion’s epic murder of his father and the mind-blowing ending. It’s clearly impossible for me to choose just one favourite moment from one book, let alone five. Oh well. Here goes.
I really disliked Tywin Lannister, and I also hated how everyone treated Tyrion. His shooting his father when he was on the privy was just perfection - hilarious and ironic and well-deserved. Then the ending of that book - the last chapter, when Littlefinger killed Lysa and at the same time revealed one of their schemes, followed immediately by the epilogue where it was shown the Catelyn was alive as what seems to me to be a vengeful, zombie version of herself. That was just, wow, so intense. It was a magnificent ending.
5. In your dream-world, how would you like to see the series end, and why?
My dream-world ending would involve Daenerys allying with the Dothraki, returning to conquer Westeros and doing so at Aegon's side. Sansa would be Protector of the North, and the rest of the Starks would have relatively happy endings too. Jaime and Brienne would get together, Arya and Gendry would eventually get together, and so on.
But even though that’s my "dream-world" ending, it’s not the ending I really want. I want GRRM’s ending, because it will be better and more complicated and more satisfying than a happily-ever-after one. I want the ending of the book to be partly devastating and partly gratifying and partly mind-boggling, so that overall it's bittersweet and something we can find fulfilling.
