Westeros Sorting Application

How did you find out about the community?: I honestly don't remember where I first read about the community. I was clicking around profile pages of my favourite fanfiction writers and I saw that many of them were members of westerosorting

All about you

1) My ideal home would be a 16th century French manoir somewhere in the Valley of the Loire (but off the tourist paths!)I love buildings with history - it shouldn't be too large, no more than 6 rooms, but it should have a French and an Englis garden both - the later full of trees and with a path leading down to the river.

2) My wishes are - I admit it freely - pretty self-centered. I would ask for health and long life for my family, financial security and a good husband for myself. The temptation was there to ask for world peace or such, but I think humanity is incapable of existing without conflict. The question brought in my mind the Tragedy of Man - a work by Imre Madach, it has been translated in a lot of languages, I can only recommand it - where the hero travels through History trying to better himself and mankind. You can imagine his success...

3) I am very proud of my students, lazy lot that they are. The spark of intelligence is there though and I do my best to help them along. It is very rewarding to see your thoughts and words take root in their young minds. They are like my children - as I'm not likely to have any of my own. And when I feel that all my work is for nothing (usually in the middle of the semester) all I need to better my mood is to go home to my little flat which I bought all by myself (anf for which I'll be paying in the next 20 years.)

4)Family, without question. They are my security net, I couldn't imagine my life without them. I was lucky enough to be born in a big family, with both sets of grandparents and great-grandparents alive when I was a child. My parents were medicine students and had to leave me with the old folks for their university years and later when they were residents. I spent my formative years with wonderful, wise and caring people - my grandparents and a childless uncle who was a retired teacher and thought me to read by the time I was 5. They made me the person I am today, and even though most of them are gone, their best parts stayed with me and the surviving children and grandchildren.
I could live without adventure. I like reading about it in books but for myself, I prefer a quiet life.

5)The quote is by Elizabeth Kubler-Ross: "People are like stained-glass windows. They sparkle and shine when the sun is out, but when the darkness sets in, their true beauty is revealed only if there is a light from within." Having been lucky enough to see people grow old and wise with dignity, I aspire to do the same. So I try to live a life to which I'll be able to look back with contentment.

6) Ah, money. In my prodigal youth I used to travel all around Europe and bring home travel cases full of books. (I once had to pay 40 Euros to cover the extra weight. Good days.)Now with mortgages being as they are, I contend myself with reading travel books, planning city tours for Paris or Rome and borrowing library books. (The waiting list for ASOIAF was a mile long, but finally, I have them here in my hands.Yes!!!)However, I do not complain as I am lucky to make enough money to cover my living expanses. And really, looking for bargains and saving every penny can be a rewarding experience. Almost like a hobby.

7)I am a voracious reader. I devour everything I can set my hands on. I prefer fiction, and can lose myself for weeks in a well-crafted universe. (With ASOIAF it has been going on for months...)
Knitting is my second favourite. My friends and family have long resigned themselves to ending up with something fluffy and crazy-coloured for their Christmas and birthdays. I like to experiment with textures, colours and patterns and have been working on a gigantic quilt for the last 2 years.
My guilty pleasure is dancing. But never in front of others! I have the grace of a bear and my musical tastes are hopelessly old-fashioned, so I only shake my booty behind closed doors.

8) Losing my mother to sudden death. She smokes like a chimney and works in an incredibly high-stress job. Not to mention all the other risk factors. The other fear would be losing her to dementia. (That also runs in the family.)I watched a favourite great-aunt go through all the stages, her spirit dying by inches.

9) My best and worst qualities are mostly interlinked. I have a somwhat passive nature, which makes me kind and patient but also prone to taking the path of least resistance. I am uncomfortable with sudden changes in my routines, and can act a bit like the stereotypical old maiden. (Note to self: get 3 cats and a parrot.)
I spent the last 20 years honing my mind, so I am more erudite than most of my peers, which made me a bit arrogant when I am in my comfort zone. Spending so much time in my head went along with neglecting my body, so now I have to struggle with my weight and bad eating/living habits.

A Song of Ice and Fire related

1) I've completed the first four books and am now reading Dance at a snail's pace, hoping against hope that by the time I'll finish it the new book will come out. I've already been spoiled about the ending.
I also read the Dunk and Egg novellas, if it is relevant.

2)Jon Snow. He is the stereotypical folktale hero, the neglected littlest son (ok, here a bastard) who goes out and conquers for himself a kingdom (becomes Lord Commander of the Night Watch). Also, his teenage angst is very well written and it amuses me to compare him to my more emo students. (You think your life sucks? Go and join the Night Watch, kiddo!)
Sansa Stark. She finds her spine while still remaining true to her ideals. Though I cannot wait for the time when she discovers that Tears of Lys are a lady's best weapons...
Cersei. She is undoubtedly a villain but very much a product of her gender, family, time and station in life. I love how she can still gain power over the men in her life - even though she's pretty bad at wielding it. (Again, how could she have learned better? Tywin Lannister is no candidate for the Daddy of the Year award.)And Robert had it coming.

3)Tywin Lannister for being a horrible father and a psycho child-killer.
Robert Baratheon for not executing him for his actions in King's Landing. Also for taking the throne and refusing to rule, marrying and refusing to be a decent husband and for siring children and refusing to raise them (bastards and trueborn equally).
Balon Greyjoy for disregarding his son's feelings or safety. (Technically he revolted while Theon was a hostage. He could have been killed for it.)

4)Jon beheading Janos Slynt. He finally became a true Lord and a Stark, even though he refused to take the name (which was of course a very Stark thing to do.) Also Ned has been at least partially avenged by this.

5) Call me a conformist but I would really like a marriage, the rightful king/queen on the throne and peace and Summer coming to Westeros. Only I cannot decide who should this ruler be, or if it wouldn't be better to return to the pre-Targaryen form of governance. The vengeance cycles are unlikely to end and Northmen would be miserable in the heat. So yeah, no idea. I don't think I actually want this to end. I would be happy to read 20 or so volumes if Martin could deliver them...
