All About You

1. Describe your ideal house/home. Please go into as much detail as possible, and be sure to include your ideal geographical location in the description!
Hm... Part of the problem is that I love where I live and I hate it at once (geographically speaking) I love the wilderness so close by - the mountains and the forests and the sound all so close to one another. On the other hand? I sort of hate how dark it gets and stays. I don't just mean the famous rain, I mean the we're pretty far north so in addition to the overcast skies our nights in the winter are really long. It gets a little painful. Not as bad as it would be if I lived further north but pretty hard to live with anyway.

So... ultimately? I am at a place where I'm not sure, geographically, where I want to live. I'm a little torn at the moment, thinking maybe New Orleans? Or some other place that's urban but warm and sunny. At least got a while. Not sure I can live that way forever, I really am a Pacific Northwest girl. Just one in need of sunlight!

Structurally? I want a house that's probably taller than it is wide. Three floors inside! I want a bedroom that takes up the top floor, almost entirely. The only walls up there would be for the bathroom and closet. Ground level would have a decent sized kitchen and a living room plus two more rooms, one for my writing and full of books, the other for my partner and their hobbies. Hmm. Probably another bathroom as well. The walls of this floor would be covered in built in shelves and nooks and crannies to give my cats a three dimensional land to play in and explore. There would also be a fabulously sized backyard entirely enclosed in a six and half foot fence where I can let the doggies play! Ooh, and a separate garage I can park my car in (because I LOOOOVE private parking) In the basement I want an extra bedroom with a private bathroom and whatever guests need when they come to stay as well as a separate craft room that can get messy when I am struck with the desire to make things.

2. Imagine you’re given the classic opportunity: a genie granting you three wishes. What would you wish for? Please be as elaborate as you can. Wishing for more wishes is not permitted!
1. I would wish for success in my chosen fields. Mainly in writing. Not necessarily wild fame and people knowing who I am but success enough that I no longer needed a day job and I was afforded respect from my peers. The kind of person someone would turn to to work on projects and give advice.

2. For my pets to stop having not-age related health problems. I don't particularly want the latter either but I feel that asking for them to live forever is a little unfair to everyone. So I just mean things like no more bladder, liver, and kidney issues, no more tendons that snap at inopportune times.

3. As sad as it is to sad I think I would take the opportunity to change some things in my past. I never THOUGHT I would say that but there have been some events in the last year that make me feel a little differently.

3. In your life so far, what accomplishment are you the most proud of? Why? You can list more than one if you have trouble deciding. ;)
I am very happy I got published. No, chances are you haven't read what I wrote :) But I HAVE been published and I HAVE been paid for it. That makes me pretty pleased!

I am also super proud of my well trained dogs that got their Canine Good Citizen certifications (and my own floppy puppy who hasn't yet) AND my cats who are pretty well trained for, well, cats. ;)

4. Which of the following is most important to you: Love, Money, Knowledge, Family, Friendship, Adventure, or Pleasure? Which is the least important to you? Please explain why for each choice.
I think I'd have to say adventure is the most important to me. But in my head it's tied tightly to friends and love (if "love" in this case means the romantic kind). I also think it ties in strongly with pleasure (unless pleasure means only sex) because exploring and doing things is sort of... pleasure-ful to me. And brings pleasantness to my life.

I guess... the least important thing to me? I hate to say this but... family. I have a sort of attachment disorder, at least one that involves the people I'm directly related to. On the other hand? I sort of think of friends and other groups as my family. But I can't say that money and knowledge are unimportant to me so that settles it. Family. :(

5. What's one quote (or passage, song lyric, etc.) that effectively describes you and your values? Explain.
This is difficult because I don't really have a stack of quotes I think describe me. I have some I LIKE. There's one by GRRM himself on the nature of fantasy vs. real life. One by Homer Simpson (of all people) about story structure. And one I have inscribed on a ring by William Blake. But none of these exactly describe me. I don't really listen to music applicable to my life either.

...

So in lieu of something that accurately describes me I'm going to leave you with a quote from Bender of Futurama that I shout whenever I am proved wrong:
I'm gonna go build my own theme park, with blackjack and hookers. In fact, forget the park!

Though I suppose one could argue that I am (usually) upbeat and silly, at least while I'm around other people. I'm a lot more sad when I'm on my own.

6. How do you manage your money? On that note, how important is money/financial security to you? Go into as much detail as you can.
I used to be way better at managing money than I currently am. I have never been particularly rich but since being particularly poor in the last several years I am willing to say that financial security means a lot more to me than it used to. I am working diligently to become better at money management but we'll see how that goes. It's easier to manage when you have more of it I think...

7. Name (and elaborate on) some of your hobbies. What are your favorite things to do outside of school/the office?
I write and read A LOT but I don't consider that a hobby anymore. Even the reading I consider important to the work. So.... I exercise daily. I love hiking and camping. I attend lots of conventions and put together a performance art event every year. I'm starting to venture a little into the costuming world...

8. Name three things you are afraid of. Explain.
1. Zombies - The slow ones. There's something about their relentlessness that just gets to me. Yeah you CAN walk fast than they do but they have an endurance that we can't match. That and they're dead and rotting and up and moving. Eventually they can and will find you. Especially because they can do things like lose the lower half of their bodies and still eat you. They will eat you slowly and painfully and lots bad shredding and whatnot.

2. Sea Monsters - Well... the THREAT of sea monsters. I don't like not being able to see what's underneath me. So maybe it's some fear of the unknown or something since specific sea monsters and real marine life doesn't REALLY scare me (except sharks, they're kind of evil and tear you to bits and whatnot), just the thought of not being able to see them as they come up to do horrible things to me that involve my body being devoid of all life.

3. This is stupid but I'm scared of needles. Well I'm scared of the needles attached to some shots and anything that's taking my blood and to IVs. See, a needle randomly puncturing my skin isn't so bad. I had a big tattoo and plans for more. I have a pierced nose and my ears pierced multiple times each. This doesn't scare me. It's something that's going directly into my vein/artery where I am convinced it will snag or snap or in some other way horribly destroy me and all of my blood will explode out of me. Or something else just as catastrophic. Ok, I'm not really sure about the details in the last bit but I'm sure it will be horrible and it will involve painful death.

9. Name (and elaborate on) your top three BEST and top three WORST qualities (personality-related, not physical). Please answer as fully as you can, as this is an important question.
Best-
1. Really good with animals. I probably understand animals better than I understand people. I don't just meant this in a "I really like animals" sort of way. I mean I DO but I have studied them and worked with them so intimately for so long that I sort of can talk to them. Or at least know what they mean when they try to communicate with me. It has actually broadened my understanding of people and made it possible for me notice other things in my life, details I never noticed before.

2. I'm always willing to help people. If there is something that needs doing I will throw myself into it. I feel it's important to do whatever I can to make life easier for others. Does someone need a ride? I will do that. Need a place to stay? Yup! Need help getting something finished before a deadline? I'm there. Want someone to hold your hand at a scary appointment? I will take the time to do that for you. Essentially... I will do whatever is needed to make a friend's life easier. Sometimes to make an acquaintance's life easier. Or hell, I've helped complete strangers too. Really. Then there's the volunteer work I do but I'm not sure if that counts:)

3. I am very passionate about things, specifically issues that involve people or animals being hurt. Or, I guess, people hurting others around them. I work really hard to make changes I want to see in the world. I strongly believe that everyone should be a good person and everyone should work make the place we live better. Both locally and globally.

Worst-
1. I have crippling depression that is making it hard to get on with my life. I'm really unhappy that I just don't have the strength to up and over come it. In the past I have done just that. This time? Not so much. In addition to all of the other lovely side affects of depression, that whole "not able to work myself out of it" is sort of making things worse. It's causing me to second guess just about everything in my life. Especially the good stuff. It really enhances the bad...

2. I'm a bit of a know-it-all. On the one hand I like that I'm so smart and that I know a little about lots of things. On the other hand I sometimes find myself that person who feels the need to chime in about... everything. And corrects people (and the TV) when they get something wrong. I'm fairly certain this is the number 1 annoying thing about Jenna that made her unpopular as a kid and wears on my current friends' patience.

3. Speaking of patience? I have none of it. At all. I want everything to happen now. I hate waiting, I hate driving slow and traffic jams. I dislike the length of time that life itself takes. Which is... not helpful. I hate people who can't make up their minds (which I can't) because it gets in the way of my finishing something.

A Song of Ice and Fire Related

1.How many books from the series have you completed?
All of them. The first four seven times and I am getting ready to reread A Dance with Dragons since I've only read it the once.

2.Who are your favorite three characters in the series? Why?
Daenerys Targaryen - She has had an amazing character arc, transforming from frightened and scared into a someone who really wants her birthright and will fight for it. She learns too, I think she learns better than most of the other characters outside of the younger Stark siblings. She's vicious but she has good reasons for that viciousness.

Asha Greyjoy - She's funny, she's strong, she can drink and throw knives and people like her. She inspires loyalty rather than fear and I like that. She breaks traditions that hurt other people. If it weren't for her I would dislike ALL Of the iron islands but she makes up for it.

Lyanna Stark - To be fair I believe she is the unknown knight so that's part of it. But even if she wasn't I don't believe that Rhaeger kidnapped her so I see a certain strength that I admire and adore in my characters.

3.Who are your least favorite three characters in the series? Why?
Theon Greyjoy - I think he's a spiteful jackass who treats other poorly. This is even before his actions at the end of CoK. I mean the first chapter of his in that book I decided I disliked him. Things in DwD have softened my anger toward the lad but pity is not the same as liking something.

Tywin Lannister - Anything his children did that you don't like can be placed firmly at his feet. He knowingly sends brutal people into the world to hurt others. Not just soldiers to fight but, well, you know. Presumably you read the books. He's a bad person. So I don't like him.

Ramsay Bolton - This is a little obvious. He's probably one of the only pure creatures of cruelty in this series that you spend any time with that does things because he wants to, not because he has a puppet master. I mean sure, Roose was manipulating him at first but I don't think he ever wanted him to be as terrible as he is.

4.#1 Favorite moment in all of ASOIAF so far? Why?
Hmmmmm.... I have to say I'm not sure.... I like the moments where I get to go "Ah ha!" but having read them so many times I can't remember each and every one. I suppose I like the parts that mention Lyanna and Dany's visit to the House of the Undying. I like the part where Meera and Jojen tell Bran about the year of the false spring... I guess I like it when they talk about the stuff before the books. Though I must like some of the things that happen in the books...

5. In your dream-world, how would you like to see the series end, and why?
I would like for Dany and Jon to meet up and strong emotions of the romantic nature to spring up between the two. Only it can never be and something tragic happens (or Jon sticks to his vows or something) and it never works out (because if the ending were too happy it wouldn't be ASoIaF) But I WOULD like to see Dany on the iron throne, having learned a thing or two about ruling after her stint in Essos. I want Tyrion to factor heavily into this, gaining a certain rock as some sort of reward. Whether he keeps it or not is entirely up to him. And I want the Stark kids to find one another once more, direwolves too (if applicable) Though in the case where direwolves AREN'T an option I think a dramatic sacrifice might be necessary because I've always questioned if she's a Stark anymore after the "she lost her direwolf" comment. Maybe some other tragic sacrifices as well. But I want one of them to reclaim the remains of Winterfell as is tradition. And I want some other things to happen but I feel this is getting too long and I am actually answering this first.

I was pleased to see Lyanna show up on your list of favorite characters, because your application was making me think of a Lyanna kind of Stark -- spirit of adventure, passion and compassion, closeness to animals -- I see a lot of the wild wolf-blood Stark here.

Your best and worst qualities seem to fit better with Targaryen for me. I was definitely reminded of Dany throughout this. :)

I also see a Tageryen (passionate, attached to your animals, creative, moody, wary of family, scholarly, and unafraid of adventure), although I think the Lyanna Stark comparisons might be apt, too.

I can see where people are getting the Targaryen from, but to me you're significantly more practical than most of them. I think Stark is the closer match.

btw, can you share the Homer Simpson quote about story structure? I am intrigued!

I'm with [livejournal.com profile] fallingtowers: I get where the Stark votes are coming from, and not everyday you have something who could really be voted Lyanna Stark, but I think you are a Targaryen and especially your best/worst traits seem to describe the perfect Targ imho.

[identity profile] mrstater.livejournal.com 2011-11-15 01:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I see some of the Stark qualities, but the attachment issues with your family and your impatience make me swing away from casting a vote there and into Targaryen territory. Because I can just see you training your dragons and freeing slaves all over Essos!

You have absolutely no idea how much I want you for Lannister right now. But the Targaryen is just too strong. :(

Also, you are the first person I've met to label yourself as "Spitfire/phyre" this way...the first person, that is, except for myself. Your LJ name, my screenname on AIM, lol. Great minds, etc. ;)
