All About You

1. Describe your ideal house/home. Please go into as much detail as possible, and be sure to include your ideal geographical location in the description!.
Windows, windows, and more windows! I want windows everywhere, light coming in everywhere. And to make it even more bright and airy, I'd much prefer light coloured wood - be it floors, cabinets, whatever - to anything else. My current bedroom is a light yellow, which, given the chance, I'd probably pick as the main wall colour within a dream house. However, I don't shy away from painting each room a different colour, from my beloved yellow to a deep crimson (the colour of the room I'm sitting in at this very moment!).

I tend to like houses with the sort of barn-style ceilings - you know, vaulted with wooden beams. I also like some sort of whimsical accents, like flowing, sheer curtains on windows. I used the words "bright" and "airy" at the start, and the more I think of it, the more those seem like the perfect descriptors. As for rooms themselves, I do favour open floor plans but also have a special place in my heart for little nooks and crannies, such as lofts or window seats, that kind of thing. In fact, I think the one room I'd be dead-set on would be a library sort of room with a full wall of windows and a loft looking over it all. Other than that, I haven't imagined individual rooms and this is getting quite wordy as it is, so I'm not going to imagine other rooms right now. Probably for the best, that.

Oh, and geography! I need to be by the ocean. I love swimming in the ocean, I love the waves. And it helps that an ocean-view is generally really pretty as well. However, I'm not a small-town person at all, so I'd need to be relatively close to a large urban area. If there's not a martini bar there, it's too small a city. Priorities, I have them.

2. Imagine you’re given the classic opportunity: a genie granting you three wishes. What would you wish for? Please be as elaborate as you can. Wishing for more wishes is not permitted!
I think my first wish would have to be for some sort of guidance right now. I'm kind of at a point in my life where I should really figure out what I want to do and how I can best get there, but I'm at a loss. I'm not without motivation - I have quite a few ideas for different things I'd like to do - but I'm just so utterly undecided and feeling a bit lost about it, to be quite honest. I'd like someone to just sit me down and say "This is what you need to do and how you will get there." Oh, and maybe finance the resulting endeavour. But I digress.

To go off of that one, I will say unlimited money. It'd just make everything so much easier if I didn't have to worry about money and could instead focus on my own happiness. Very typical wish, but for good reason!

Finally, hmm, I'm very tempted to just wish for Richard Madden in my bed and be done with it, but I will try my very best to be on my most mature behaviour. So instead, I will wish for an end to all discrimination. As a straight white girl, I don't suffer from a whole lot of discrimination myself, but many of my close friends are gay, so there's a major minority group there. Another friend of mine is a Native-American from the States and she's told me about situations where she's gotten judged for either her skin colour or for her nationality. And this just kills me. As an eternal optimist, I want a world full of sunshine and rainbows and puppies and cupcakes and happiness. And Richard Madden in my bed.

3. In your life so far, what accomplishment are you the most proud of? Why? You can list more than one if you have trouble deciding. ;)
More than one thing, you say? I will take you up on that! First of all, I hold on to a lot of pride for once completing a novel. Though this is by no means a recent accomplishment - it was almost five years ago - I still feel extremely proud of doing so. Looking back at it now, it's in need of some major editing but nonetheless, pride!

For more recent accomplishments, I'm proud of my relationship with my family. I feel like I've grown up a lot in the past few years and see my parents not only as my parents, but as friends in their own rights. Same with my brothers; my youngest brother and I are very close nowadays. I'm also extremely proud of graduating from an honours program in English. I worked hard - well, okay not as hard as I could have or perhaps should have, but still. I did it, and I did well, and now's not the time for modesty, right? ;)

4. Which of the following is most important to you: Love, Money, Knowledge, Family, Friendship, Adventure, or Pleasure? Which is the least important to you? Please explain why for each choice.
Friendship and Family, hands down. I think those two go hand in hand, so I don't feel like I'm cheating by choosing two. I'd be nothing without my family, honestly. Who else played such a part into shaping me into myself? As for friends, I do count my family as my friends, but more to the point, I'm a social person. I like just being with my friends, be it out dancing, having dinner, or just hanging out on someone's couch. I think I truly flourish with my friends, and I just wouldn't even want to live without people surrounding me.

As for the least important thing, I'd probably have to say Money. I almost said Adventure, just because I haven't had much a chance for that - yet! - but I don't think that's reason enough to disvalue something. I want to have some adventures! Someday . . . As for money, I do enjoy spending it, yes, and may not be able to get by very well without it, but it's only money. It comes and it goes, so there's no point getting too attached to it. This may seem at odds with one of my three wishes, but that's because I don't think our current society would allow me to get by without money, though I'd much rather have the other things on the list anyway. I know, I know, WORST. BANKER. EVER.

5. What's one quote (or passage, song lyric, etc.) that effectively describes you and your values? Explain.
"Partyin', partyin', yeah!" - "Friday," Rebecca Black

No, I'm totally joking! I'm just really bad at picking quotes but I can do better than that, I assure you. So instead, I will go with the following:
"Life is so very fragile. We are all vulnerable, and we will all, at some point in our lives, fall. We will all fall. We must carry this in our hearts, that what we have is special, that is can be taken from us, and that when it is taken from us, we will be tested. We will be tested to our very souls. We will now all be tested. It is these times, it is this pain, that allows us to look inside ourselves." - Friday Night Lights (S01E01 - "Pilot")

and also this:
"We are perfect in our imperfection." - Megan McCafferty, Second Helpings

The first quote because I think it can resonate with everybody. I think it's very, very truthful, an I think it's especially truthful of me because there is a certain optimism to it. I mean, sure, clearly it's a quote about hard time, but I feel like it has this sense of there's a light at the end of the tunnel to it, which is very much keeping with my personality. I think it could be words to live by, to be honest, and even if I'm not living by it right now, it's just a quote that hits me every time, a total punch in the gut, and therefore I feel it's worthy of being here.

If the first quote is how I should live, the second is how I do live. Everyone is imperfect, that's just a fact, but I've never thought that's a bad thing. Quite the contrary, it'd be pretty boring if we were all perfect, wouldn't it? I'm totally the type of person to see the best (and okay, sometimes the worst) in people, I'm alwaysalwaysalways looking for the bright side of things. So yes, I think this is a pretty accurate summation of my outlook on life.

6. How do you manage your money? On that note, how important is money/financial security to you? Go into as much detail as you can.
I'm decent with my money, I think. I spend a lot on trivial things, on small purchases that add up: CDs, movies, drinks, smoothies . . . However, I'm the type of person that will fret over big purchases and make sure it's something I really want before I buy it. I'm okay at saving, having a regular savings account with an okay balance, as well as having started making small contributions to a Tax-Free Savings Account and Registered Savings Plan. Even making just a small contribution into such things at a young age can really add up in the long run. /banker

As for the importance of financial security, despite having just listed money as the thing of least importance in a previous question, financial security is important to me at this time. I have a house, so I have to prepare for the worst. I also have two - perhaps soon to be three! - dogs, so again, I want to have financial security so I can ensure that they have access to any care they need in the future.

7. Name (and elaborate on) some of your hobbies. What are your favorite things to do outside of school/the office?
I read a lot. I'm a huge bookworm and always have been, plus I'm a very quick reader. I also do write, obviously. Some. I'm kind of going through a dry spell right now, but that's okay, I'll get back to it. I'm very much into music, boasting an enormous CD collection and an even larger iTunes library. I watch more than my fair share of TV shows and movies, though I tend to watch shows on DVD more than actual current shows, Game of Thrones and Community being the obvious exceptions. Like the lovely [livejournal.com profile] simmply_anna, I spend a good deal of time playing The Sims and posting Sims-related stuff. As far as sports go, I'm a seasonal girl, preferring swimming/water sports and snowboarding depending on the season. As it's super-hot outside right now, of course I'm dying to go snowboarding. -_- Oh, and of course I love spending time with my friends - dinners, drinks, dancing, watching movies, whatever. I'm not picky! Right now a lot of my time is consumed by my dogs - I have three, including an eleven-week old puppy so you can imagine the attention she requires. But it's all good; I love those brats!

8. Name three things you are afraid of. Explain.
Let's start with my big one: knives. IT'S NOT IRRATIONAL, KNIVES CAN TOTALLY KILL YOU. But yeah, my boyfriend likes to try to "break" me off this fear by pointing a knife at me from across the kitchen or touching the flat side of the knife to my arm and I legitimately freak out. So that's one.

I used to be very afraid of death or people I love dying, but I've grown to accept that that's just a fact of life. So now I'm afraid things that seem much more topical in my life: settling and being forgotten/losing touch. I'm not afraid of settling as in "settling down," but in the sense that since I'm not sure where I want my life to go, I'm just going to kind of fall into something and go with it and never get the motivation to do something I actually want to do. Which ties into my third fear. I see some of my friends moving or thinking about moving , and having all these ideas and since I feel so undecided in my life, it's scary to see people who aren't. Also, I'm not always the most successful at keeping in touch with people so that's a big part of this fear as well.

9. Name (and elaborate on) your top three BEST and top three WORST qualities (personality-related, not physical). Please answer as fully as you can, as this is an important question.
Okay, best qualities first! Normally I'd be rather modest about this, but now's not the time for modesty so I'm just going to get this out of the way and say my intelligence. I have an higher than average IQ, which has been helpful throughout my life, as you can imagine.

I'm also pretty much your by-the-book optimist and I optimistically count this a good thing! I always see the bright side of things and, as a result, am generally rather laid-back and easygoing. That's not to say I don't get stressed, but I think that if I had a mantra, it'd probably be something along the lines of there's no point worrying about things you can't change, it'll work itself out, that kind of thing. I like going through life being happy and this personality trait certainly helps that!

Finally, I'm going to say my imagination. I have a very overactive imagination and am always coming up with different characters and scenarios in my head. I get very attached to my characters too! While I don't think I'm unrealistic, my imagination certainly helps me get through any boring bits of the day. I can't guarantee that I don't have a dazed look on my face at the time, but hey, in my head, it's all good.

Now for the worst qualities. I'm really, really indecisive. This seems at odds with me declaring my laid-backness as a good quality, but there's a line and I think I've crossed it. I am really, really bad at making my own decisions a lot of the time. I like to have feedback and direction and I like the please people, so all these things combined mean that I'm just flat-out indecisive to the nth degree. It can be rather frustrating for me, so I can't even imagine how frustrated others *coughcoughmyboyfriendcough* must get with me about that.

Once I do decide on something though, watch out! I have an old habit of arguing for the sake of arguing, or just flat-out being stubborn. Once I get an idea in my head, I'm pretty much dead-set in it and will argue it until the end of eternity. Or if I do change my mind (not bloody likely), good luck getting me to say so. I also have trouble letting go of first impressions, I'm stubborn in that as well. I'm not overly confrontational to most people and even level-headed, but with my family or boyfriend or those I know rather well, I don't censor myself so much and then all this bull-headedness comes right out.

Finally, let's go with a really obvious one to anyone that knows me: procrastination. Seriously, I am the worst at procrastinating. Fifteen-page essay due tomorrow? Oh, I'll start that at 10 pm. Yeah. Even something as little as responding to text messages, if I can put it off, I will. SUCH AS THIS APPLICATION, AS IT SO HAPPENS. Oops.

A Song of Ice and Fire Related

1.Who are your favorite three characters in the series? Why?
This is really, really tough for me, but I'm going to try my best. Deep breath!

Jaime Lannister: I enjoyed Jaime from the very beginning of the series, though with his redemption arc, I can now safely say that I actually like him. I'm always a sucker for the arrogant characters, and Jaime fits that prototype perfectly. He always amused me with how flippant he could be about everything, and while his brother may be more notably witty, I'm a big fan of Jaime's particular brand of dry humour; I'm big on the snark. That's enough to make me appreciate a character, but I couldn't declare him a no-holds-barred favourite until after ASOS. Between his interactions and actions with Brienne and the glimpses into his own mind, I whole-heartedly fell in love with his character. I REGRET NOTHING.

Arianne Martell: Though I don't feel I know her terribly well just yet, I love her. I love her fire and spirit, I lover her cunning intelligence, I love her determination, I just love her. I think this series has some very strong female characters, but Arianne stands out to me because of her fire. She's a very passionate person in every way, it seems, and I just love that. Hopefully the series will eventually give us more Arianne to better get to know her and so I can fan-girl over her some more.

Robb Stark: I really, really loved Robb's story arc. Except for the ending, of course, but it did make his arc perfect in a heart-breaking way, I'll admit. I loved how he was this boy pretty much forced into a war and we got to see him really come into his own. I respect GRRM an awful lot for killing Robb off when he did, when Robb was fully a man. I mean, it's the death I've had the hardest time getting over, but that doesn't mean I don't respect it. Okay, full disclosure: Still not over it. Will never be over it. Anyway, Robb's had one of my favourite arcs so far, and as a character, I love how he has qualities from both his father and his mother, and how you can see how these qualities become both strengths and weaknesses for him. What can I say, I really loved watching him develop.

Very, very honourable mention: Arya Stark. I adore Arya, I really really do, but she feels too . . . perfect right now, I guess. I mean, yes, she does have her flaws, such as being head-strong and making rash decisions, but I can't shake the feeling that her character is kind of catering to the tomboy girl becomes fierce warrior trope right now. And she is plenty fierce, don't get me wrong, but I want her to stretch beyond this trope. She's definitely one of my favourites, but I just want to see her grow some more. I think that's certainly in the cards for her, given where she's ended up. So, to sum up: I think she's awesome, but I think she has the potential to be even MORE awesome and I want to see her reach that potential, damn it!

2.Who are your least favorite three characters in the series? Why?
Joffrey Baratheon: Obvious choice is obvious but there is not a single redeeming factor about this little shit. I mean, really, can someone give me a redeeming factor about dear ol' Joff? Didn't think so. Oh, I suppose his hair is supposed to be quite a pretty colour, that's as far as the redeeming qualities go in my book. It's a testament to the character that I don't think he's a one-dimensional villain - I understand a lot of the things that made him as he was, I understand a lot of his motivations, even if I don't agree with it, but regardless, there was not a single quality I liked about Joffrey.

Walder Frey: UGH. It would really hurt me to say a positive thing about Walder fucking Frey, so I guess it's a good thing I don't have to, hey? Even before we knew he was a slimy back-stabber, he was still skeevy as all-out get and completely creeped me out. And then he brought about the deaths of Robb and Catelyn and for that, I can never forgive. I don't even care that we now have zombie!Cat, he still brought their deaths for his own petty reasons and broke my heart and just UGH, a million times UGH.

Theon Greyjoy: I struggled over this one, I really did, because I've read a preview chapter for the upcoming A Dance With Dragons and actually felt an ounce of sympathy for him, which is a new emotion for me. Apparently it wasn't enough though, because in re-reading the books right now, I still find myself wanting to scream at him "WHAT IN THE BLOODY HELL DO YOU THINK YOU'RE DOING, YOU LITTLE TWAT?" He's such a smarmy little thing even from the start and look, I get it, he wants to please people, make a name for himself, all that, but there's GOT to be a better way to go about that. I feel like Theon is full of nothing but bad decisions and even worse execution and add that to a personality that's always rubbed me the wrong way and there you have it. How couldn't I put him as a least favourite?

Dishonourable mention: I need to get this off my chest: I also take offense to Ygritte for a totally different reason - she is so freakin' under-developed, I can't stand it! Was her sole purpose in life to give Jon some sex before he became 100% devoted to the Night's Watch? Because that's all I ever got from her and it just kills me.

3.#1 Favorite moment in all of ASOIAF so far? Why?
Okay, this is easily the hardest question here. I don't even know where to begin. I mean, I'm all over the big YAY moments, such as Dany and the birth of the dragons or Sansa growing a backbone, and I lovelovelove a lot of the quiet moments of character interactions, so how can I ever choose? Which leads me to going with a weird decision: Ned's death. Not because I liked that moment - I didn't - but because of what it meant for the series. That was the event that set everything in motion, had an effect on every single character (okay, maybe not Dany as much but you know), and was the definite turning-point in the series. It's the one moment I couldn't imagine the book taking out, and therefore I'd say it's the most important moment. And if I adore this series like I do, how can I not choose the most important moment as my favourite? There you have it.

4. In your dream-world, how would you like to see the series end, and why?
I will have to respectfully decline from answering this question. You see, I'm the type that doesn't really think of how a story will end, I want to enjoy the ride. Honestly, I don't care for the specifics of how it ends as long as it's satisfying as an ending. I haven't even thought of how I'd want it to end, nor do I have any interest in doing so. Sorry for the non-answer; what a horrible way for me to end my essay of an application.

Oh, but I can give you this: I want Cersei to be sentenced to death by a stamp-happy Tommen who doesn't read the documents he puts his royal seal on. Not because I necessarily hate Cersei, but because, come on, how awesomely ironic would that be? Other than that, I'm not going to venture any guesses nor any hopes. All the better to not have them crushed with!

I love your quotes and that you love Arianne ♥ I find you a tough read but Targaryen stands out to me in the end, you seem like a fiery sort underneath, two of your three best traits could make a case for ~genius~, and you want ... IDK, something BIG out of life. I considered Martell, I associate them with a zeal for life and you've got a lot of Gryffindor-like ferocity there in your favorite
characters list (pardon the cross-fandom justifications), but I'm just feeling dragon a bit more. With a certain streak of Tommen.

I waddled between Tully and Tyrell - you seem down to earth, love your family and friend, are fun loving without overdoing it... but in the end I say Martell, because that's the feeling I get when I look at the general vibe of the whole application rather than the single answers.

Your best and worst traits suggest you are secretly me. Please advise.

In any case, I'm feeling a Tyrell vibe more than anything. More optimistic than Lannister, and I don't see Martells of any stripe as being indecisive, so Tyrell it is.

YOU DID BEAUTIFULLY, MY DEAR. I was readying AFFC until 5am, so I'm made of fail for voting this late.

I saw so many Stark qualities, and a lot of Tyrell (you remind me of Margaery SO MUCH). I can see the Martell, most definitely. You're a lot like Arianne, too. But I do not shy away from my vote.

Targaryen fits you well. You have the imagination and creativity down, and the intelligence factor, but I also think your desire for guidance, which I associate with the dragons. And your fear of being forgotten really resonated with me with the house, as well.

Mmkay. Am coming to three conclusions: Tully, Tyrell, and Martell. So I shall split ye into three pieces and place one in each house. Or, oh wait, I guess I ought to make a decision...

There is, first off, that emphasis on family and friends, on needing others beside you. Alongside that, the eternal optimism, and a sort of upbeat tempo throughout. You don't dredge down (er, that is, you don't seem to in the application), don't allow yourself to be buried by the unhappy bits of life that you do recognize. And... Although accepting the reality of life's shite whilst remaining upbeat inclines me first toward Martell and Tyrell, I don't think it's unsuited to Tully. At the very least, see the Blackfish and his "okay, life" attitude in spite of the issues with Hoster. See also his continued dedication to the family, and particularly to Catelyn.

And it may be that I relate Tullys most strongly to this family-friends connection (or at least to your words on such connection), but Tully continues to rise in mind, and you know what? I'm going with a perhaps particularly light-hearted Tully. May be that I'm working on wayward recollections ('s been a while since I read the books, apologies), but the general sense seems apt. Owing perhaps to your optimism, you've an openness and sense of forward motion, a lively spirit that seems particularly suited to a house tied to rivers.

The Tullys are free to give play to imagination, and aren't so very liable to set money as the highest priority; at the same time, there is a practicality that might well recognize the necessity of money, and so accept it and its accompanying responsibilities. Stubbornness seems to me a Tully sort of trait.

You don't seem prone to bragging, but also aren't afraid to bid adieu to modesty, when the situation calls for it; think a Tully knows how to present strengths when necessary.

As for dwelling? Preference for windows and open layout seems suitable for a Tully; room to breath and to move freely. And Riverrun may not be so-very-close to the ocean, but it does rise beside some quite impressive water (and swimming opportunities, eh?). Right, and your preference for cities? Tullys may not tend toward the most populous of areas, but they do seem to yearn for others, for the bustle of gatherings. So there is that.

Right, all right. Cutting it off here, before I ramble further. Hope this made some sort of sense, and if you should like further (or simply more coherent) reasons, please do say, and can give. Suffice for now to say that you seem a sort suited to the rush of rivers and the strength of family, and do think you'd manage well around Riverrun.
