Win or Die (hopefully, this is detailed enough??) EDITED AS OF 2:57 PM EST

Name: Mneme
How did you find out about the community? If it's through an LJ user, please tell us who it is:
Age: 21
Location: Maryland
Occupation: GRAD STUDENT in stats (well, I will be in the fall...)

All About You

1. Describe your ideal house/home. Please go into as much detail as possible, and be sure to include your ideal geographical location in the description!.
It has to be close to public transportation. I hate driving. Like a lot. I has to have a library and a gourmet kitchen to accomadate my love of cooking and literature. Space to invite friends for tea and such. Good internet connection else, I will go insane. A gaming room for consoles and PC. Another room for my own server, so I could work from home. Distinctly, seperated rooms. Oh, bedroom would probably be useful. Space from my family to stay with me if they wished. Moderate amount of sun but hopefully nowhere where it gets above 70 degrees, I'm not terribly fond of hot weather (yes, 70 for me is HOT). So, the place should have good heating.
Location wise, maybe England or Canada? This sounds utterly generic. *cries*

2. Imagine you’re given the classic opportunity: a genie granting you three wishes. What would you wish for? Please be as elaborate as you can. Wishing for more wishes is not permitted!
1) An NSF grant. It would help my resume.
2) A guaranteed tenured position.
3) Making sure my entire immediate family is sucessful.

3. In your life so far, what accomplishment are you the most proud of? Why? You can list more than one if you have trouble deciding. ;)
1) I started a society for women in mathematics at my undergrad institution. I graduated a year ago but it STILL EXISTS. I feel it is critical to have support group for mathematics since;
1) The numbers are so few.
2) We (women) are still subjected to subtle misogyny in STEM fields.
....*gets off soapbox*
2) Graduating from my undergrad institution. >_< IHTFP

4. Which of the following is most important to you: Love, Money, Knowledge, Family, Friendship, Adventure, or Pleasure? Which is the least important to you? Please explain why for each choice.
Most: Tie between Knowledge and money and Family.
Ignorance is one of the most deadliest things that exist and the only thing to counter that is knowledge. But how does one garner knowledge, initially it's through family and I lucked out in having parents who were dedicated to education. And were extremely supportive in that regard. But education requires (unfortunately, in this day and age) money. Money is also important from a practical point of view. The pursuit of knowledge requires money. Having a family requires money. Thus, these three things I usually consider intertwined/

Least: Pleasure
It's amazingly fleeting and destructive.

5. What's one quote (or passage, song lyric, etc.) that effectively describes you and your values? Explain.
>_< Only one?? That's a bit limiting. *sigh*
Okay, how about this:

"Sometimes I give myself admirable advice, but I am incapable of taking it."
This describes me reasonably well. I can give advice. I am reasonably good at understanding someones psyche but I fail at applying it to myself.

6. How do you manage your money? On that note, how important is money/financial security to you? Go into as much detail as you can.
*cries*
I'm better now than I was a year ago. I'm working more on long term planning, but I'm a part-time tutor at the moment (so money isn't exactly rolling in) and I'm going to be a grad student come fall. *sigh*
Financial security is important to me. I don't want to be filthy rich (though it would help...), I do want to be in a state where I can pay my bills, afford basic necessities and occasionally afford to travel abroad without going into debt needlessly. That being said I have a fondness of high-end things (computers, ingrediants, yarn, shoes, etc).

7. Name (and elaborate on) some of your hobbies. What are your favorite things to do outside of school/the office?
I knit, cook, read, do logic puzzles, PC RPG. I enjoy going to movies.
But I find it comforting to Skype with friends as well.
And I find reading academic articles nice.

8. Name three things you are afraid of. Explain.
1) Failing myself so epically, I can't recover.
2) My parents getting Alzheimer. I'm the oldest and most likely the one who would end up caring for them and I have no idea how I would deal with that.
I've seen what Alzheimer's does to people and I honestly don't know how I would deal with looking at someone who's raised me for so long and realizing they don't know who I am.
3)Dying without a legacy. A bit vain, I agree, but I would like to leave something of worth/purpose when I die as oppose to have merely existed.

9. Name (and elaborate on) your top three BEST and top three WORST qualities (personality-related, not physical). Please answer as fully as you can, as this is an important question.
Worst:
I'm NOTORIOUSLY hard on myself. I have tendency to fall into emotional slumps. I just don't feel like doing anything and just lie in bed and stare. I hate it.
Selflessness:I tend to devote time to helping others as opposed to helping myself.
I have a temper.
Best:
Selflessness. It's a double-edged sword.
I tend to be a decent listener.
My sarcasm?

A Song of Ice and Fire Related
*warning: I haven't read the books in like...2 years?*
1.Who are your favorite three characters in the series? Why?
I'm never good with these favourite/least thingy because they tend to vary....
But at this moment,
Sansa
Reason: She annoyed me at first, but seeing someone slowly broken and their reaction to it is very interesting. And grows on you. I'm terribly found of character growth.

Hound
Reason: He's very... honest. Brutally so, the majority of the time, but it's refreshing.

and at this time..

Samwell
Reason:
He's not the strongest. Or the prettiest. Or particularly good at anything. But he realizes that and uses it to his advantage. He's clever and quite frankly, I find him rather resilient. It takes a lot to keep living when the world rather have you dead and I respect that.

2.Who are your least favorite three characters in the series? Why?

Eddard Stark (*gasp*)
Reason: He's bloody naive. No really. He's bloody naive to the whole court politics. He seems to work under the assumption that everyone holds the same values and principles that he holds
Which leads to....

Robb Stark
Reason: While what you did was very noble and respectable, it was also incredibly stupid. I'm not condoning the Red Wedding!! But really, you could have avoided the whole dying thing by KEEPING IT IN YOUR PANTS/TROUSERS.

Joffrey
Reason: I need a reason.....?

3.#1 Favorite moment in all of ASOIAF so far? Why?
Finding out A Dance with Dragons was coming out this year? No? Meanies.
Fine. Perhaps, when Sansa switched to Alayne. I have a disturbing fondness of "Break the Cutie/Destroying Innocence" moments.

4. In your dream-world, how would you like to see the series end, and why?
A. EVERYONE DIES. Because I would find that mildly hilarious. I'm a horrible, horrible person.

B. (SHIPPER-DREAM WORLD) Jon Snow is son of Lynna Stark and Rhaegar. He marries Arya(or Dany). Sansa marries Sandor, Jamie and Brienne marries. AND THEY ALL LIVE HAPPILY EVER AFTER. Look, I read trashy romance novels on occasion. HUMOR ME.

C. (Realism-dream world) Let's see. Jon Snow stays lord comm. of the Black for a looooooong time. He institutes reforms and what not. He is much beloved and dies at like 115. Dany reclaim Iron Throne. But the kingdom is broken into the seven Kingdoms again. Sandor finds peace, as does Sansa. Preferably together? Still working on this dream world....ask me after Dance with Dragons comes out?

You may want to edit up application, as the HTML has messed up. It looks like you copied and pasted your app. into the rich text editor rather than the HTML editor.

If you need any help, let me know. :)

[identity profile] odeocowboys.livejournal.com 2011-05-16 05:52 pm (UTC)(link)
It seems your lj-cut is not working! I think that you might have made this post in rich text and that can be easily fixed! Click on the icon to edit your entry and then click on html. From there, copy and paste your application with the html into the text area. That should fix the problem. If you don't have a copy of your application saved, then I can message your original submission to you.

It also seems that you left section 3 of question 8 blank, so if you could answer that it would be greatly appreciated!

Hmm... The fact that you chose family, money, and knowledge as your "top important things" is interesting... I don't think I've ever seen those 3 together. :) Now... what does that mean?

I don't see much Stark in your application, so that's good. I don't really see much of the ruthlessness that I associate with the Greyjoys, either. While you've got the love of knowledge and moodiness that I tend to associate with the Martells, I don't think you have their *passion* and hedonism. You do list family as being important to you, but complain about the Starks' adherence to honor, and I just honestly don't see anything that screams Tully at me. Your greatest accomplishments are helping others and finishing your education-- that doesn't seem very Lannister to me.

So that leaves Tyrell, and Targaryen. Out of the two, I think I see more Targaryen. I don't think you're as secretive as the Tyrells, and that "Selflessness being a double-edged sword" just seems very much like the more sane of the Dragons. :)

Greyjoy

First off, I dig your icon! :3

I'm definitely getting Targaryen from you, mainly because of your fears and best/worst qualities. Although, the fact that you started a math group for women seems like the kind of thing Dany would do if she were real, especially since women are generally thought to be bad at math.

[identity profile] stoopid-silly.livejournal.com 2011-05-16 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a tough call between Targ and Lannister, but I just got a slightly bigger Targaryen vibe from you.

tyrell

[identity profile] cyshobbitlass.livejournal.com 2011-05-16 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I see a lot of Targaryen and. Lannister but ultimately, I saw Martell the most. It wasn't just the women's rights, knowledge and family are very important to the sun snakes too.

Tully

[identity profile] just-a-dram.livejournal.com 2011-05-16 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
The theme of education that runs through much of this makes me say Martell.

Tyrell

[identity profile] yunaleska.livejournal.com 2011-05-16 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
The people here are super anal retentive about perfect format and HTML. I find it some what silly.

I'm going to go with Targaryen because your affinity for romance. While I love my house, "romantic" is not a word I'd use to describe Martells... at all. So Targaryen for sure.

I think you're a Martell. You seem driven, yet very pragmatic at the same time, and you care deeply about both knowledge and the people around you, and though each of those traits fits multiple Houses, I think Martell's the one that brings them all together. And the fact that you listed founding a women's mathematics society as your biggest accomplishment? Totally Dornish. (HECK YEAH about that, btw. *went to a women's college*)

Lannister

[identity profile] rowena742.livejournal.com 2011-05-17 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
I kind of want to just send you off to the Maesters, but that'll have to wait for stamping. :p Anyway, I see a lot of Greyjoy in that you're very direct about what you're willing to share, but you don't seem to want to share more than you have to, at least with "outsiders." But the selflessness doesn't quite fit with that, and you do say you enjoy the finer things in life, so Martell it is.

Stark

[identity profile] esc-key.livejournal.com 2011-05-17 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
I totally think Lannister because I can see Tyrion or Jaime hoping everyone dies just for the lulz. (Particularly in their current moodiness.)

Stark

[identity profile] kitrinlu.livejournal.com 2011-05-17 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
Hmm, I can definitely see aspects of Lannister, Targaryen and Martell, but I think Targaryen fits you best.

Lannister

[identity profile] deeplyunhip.livejournal.com 2011-05-17 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
Hmmmm, your sense of humor *is* very Lannister, but I'm not sure I would even describe the nice Lannisters (Kevan, Myrcella, etc.) as "selfless". I going to go with Targaryen, mainly for your ambitions and fears.

Lannister

[identity profile] cloudscapes.livejournal.com 2011-05-17 03:50 am (UTC)(link)
I'm kind of torn between Martell and Targaryen, even though I can definitely see the Lannister, too! I think ultimately my vote goes with the Martell's because I think you'd be really at home with the Dornish ladies. :D

Targaryen

[identity profile] lizbeth-mairead.livejournal.com 2011-05-17 04:10 am (UTC)(link)
Martell.

You have a very strong feeling for family, but your personality very much echos "Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken" to me :)

Targaryen

Martell

Lannister

[identity profile] vivianedanglars.livejournal.com 2011-05-17 01:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Tyrell! That was hard. I considered Stark (but you'd be a very particular Stark, and your least favourite characters tell a lot) and Tully, but I tend to consider Tullys as more focused on single ideals/aims, while your app had a more "flamboyant" vibe in it. Your family/money/knowledge tie is quite Tyrellish in my opinion.

I think you're a Martell. You remind me of the strong female characters of that house, and your sense of humor is also pretty Martell.

I'm going to vote Martell. You feel Unbent, Unbowed and Unbroken to me, and the lots of light in your house sounded very Martell.

It won't be that hot...it's fictional. :)

The fear of dealing with an ailing parent had a parallel to the Martells for me too.

Going Martell for this one, although Targaryen was a close second. I agree with previous comment that I wish I could sort you to the Maesters!

I think you are very Tully, with perhaps a side of Martell and Lannister (very Tyrion-esque sarcasm, yeah).
