Also, on a personal note, and I really hate to be the kind of person who says this, especially because you seem like a very cool person, but if you long for financial security do not get a PhD in history. The market for history PhDs in academia is stagnant. Getting a tenure track job in the field is like winning the lottery. Your professors may not tell you this, either because they don't realize, or they're overly optimistic, or whatever it might be, but I can't possibly overstate how difficult it is to get a decent job with a history PhD. It's like gambling with 6 to 10 years of your life, during which you will be unbelievably poor, and possibly accumulating debt, as many grad student stipends are not enough to live on.
