Well, I didn't really start out with a grand scheme for naming my cats, it just sorta turned out that way. Maire is named for the friend who gave her to me (plain ole Mary sounds like a weird cat name to me) and Mac (aka "son" in Scots) came about b/c it was really a better idea than calling him Cartman. ;-D
I've certainly hit lots of brick walls with the genealogy, but I usually focus on another line for a while when I pick it back up (there's always a random maternal line!). Had to resort to DNA testing to partially work out one brick wall, which is still not *totally* figured out...the early Scots in my family tree didn't really believe in giving uncommon first names, overall. James/William/John/Thomas...boo hiss with the super-common names!
Re the Greyjoy "vibes" I felt: I joined after the latest "combo" game started (you can see it @ greathousesHERE (http://greathouses.livejournal.com/tag/house%20combo%20game)), but most everyone is a blend of more than one ASOIAF house, I think.
