All About You

1. Describe your ideal house/home. Please go into as much detail as possible, and be sure to include your ideal geographical location in the description!.
It has to be close to public transportation. I hate driving. Like a lot. I has to have a library and a gourmet kitchen to accomadate my love of cooking and literature. Space to invite friends for tea and such. Good internet connection else, I will go insane. A gaming room for consoles and PC. Another room for my own server, so I could work from home. Distinctly, seperated rooms. Oh, bedroom would probably be useful. Space from my family to stay with me if they wished. Moderate amount of sun but hopefully nowhere where it gets above 70 degrees, I'm not terribly fond of hot weather (yes, 70 for me is HOT). So, the place should have good heating.
Location wise, maybe England or Canada? This sounds utterly generic. *cries*

2. Imagine you’re given the classic opportunity: a genie granting you three wishes. What would you wish for? Please be as elaborate as you can. Wishing for more wishes is not permitted!
1) An NSF grant. It would help my resume.
2) A guaranteed tenured position.
3) Making sure my entire immediate family is sucessful.

3. In your life so far, what accomplishment are you the most proud of? Why? You can list more than one if you have trouble deciding. ;)
1) I started a society for women in mathematics at my undergrad institution. I graduated a year ago but it STILL EXISTS. I feel it is critical to have support group for mathematics since;
1) The numbers are so few.
2) We (women) are still subjected to subtle misogyny in STEM fields.
....*gets off soapbox*
2) Graduating from my undergrad institution. >_< IHTFP

4. Which of the following is most important to you: Love, Money, Knowledge, Family, Friendship, Adventure, or Pleasure? Which is the least important to you? Please explain why for each choice.
Most: Tie between Knowledge and money and Family.
Ignorance is one of the most deadliest things that exist and the only thing to counter that is knowledge. But how does one garner knowledge, initially it's through family and I lucked out in having parents who were dedicated to education. And were extremely supportive in that regard. But education requires (unfortunately, in this day and age) money. Money is also important from a practical point of view. The pursuit of knowledge requires money. Having a family requires money. Thus, these three things I usually consider intertwined/

Least: Pleasure
It's amazingly fleeting and destructive.

5. What's one quote (or passage, song lyric, etc.) that effectively describes you and your values? Explain.
>_< Only one?? That's a bit limiting. *sigh*
Okay, how about this:

"Sometimes I give myself admirable advice, but I am incapable of taking it."
This describes me reasonably well. I can give advice. I am reasonably good at understanding someones psyche but I fail at applying it to myself.

6. How do you manage your money? On that note, how important is money/financial security to you? Go into as much detail as you can.
*cries*
I'm better now than I was a year ago. I'm working more on long term planning, but I'm a part-time tutor at the moment (so money isn't exactly rolling in) and I'm going to be a grad student come fall. *sigh*
Financial security is important to me. I don't want to be filthy rich (though it would help...), I do want to be in a state where I can pay my bills, afford basic necessities and occasionally afford to travel abroad without going into debt needlessly. That being said I have a fondness of high-end things (computers, ingrediants, yarn, shoes, etc).

7. Name (and elaborate on) some of your hobbies. What are your favorite things to do outside of school/the office?
I knit, cook, read, do logic puzzles, PC RPG. I enjoy going to movies.
But I find it comforting to Skype with friends as well.
And I find reading academic articles nice.

8. Name three things you are afraid of. Explain.
1) Failing myself so epically, I can't recover.
2) My parents getting Alzheimer. I'm the oldest and most likely the one who would end up caring for them and I have no idea how I would deal with that.
I've seen what Alzheimer's does to people and I honestly don't know how I would deal with looking at someone who's raised me for so long and realizing they don't know who I am.
3)Dying without a legacy. A bit vain, I agree, but I would like to leave something of worth/purpose when I die as oppose to have merely existed.

9. Name (and elaborate on) your top three BEST and top three WORST qualities (personality-related, not physical). Please answer as fully as you can, as this is an important question.
Worst:
I'm NOTORIOUSLY hard on myself. I have tendency to fall into emotional slumps. I just don't feel like doing anything and just lie in bed and stare. I hate it.
Selflessness:I tend to devote time to helping others as opposed to helping myself.
I have a temper.
Best:
Selflessness. It's a double-edged sword.
I tend to be a decent listener.
My sarcasm?

A Song of Ice and Fire Related
*warning: I haven't read the books in like...2 years?*
1.Who are your favorite three characters in the series? Why?
I'm never good with these favourite/least thingy because they tend to vary....
But at this moment,
Sansa
Reason: She annoyed me at first, but seeing someone slowly broken and their reaction to it is very interesting. And grows on you. I'm terribly found of character growth.

Hound
Reason: He's very... honest. Brutally so, the majority of the time, but it's refreshing.

and at this time..

Samwell
Reason:
He's not the strongest. Or the prettiest. Or particularly good at anything. But he realizes that and uses it to his advantage. He's clever and quite frankly, I find him rather resilient. It takes a lot to keep living when the world rather have you dead and I respect that.

2.Who are your least favorite three characters in the series? Why?

Eddard Stark (*gasp*)
Reason: He's bloody naive. No really. He's bloody naive to the whole court politics. He seems to work under the assumption that everyone holds the same values and principles that he holds
Which leads to....

Robb Stark
Reason: While what you did was very noble and respectable, it was also incredibly stupid. I'm not condoning the Red Wedding!! But really, you could have avoided the whole dying thing by KEEPING IT IN YOUR PANTS/TROUSERS.

Joffrey
Reason: I need a reason.....?

3.#1 Favorite moment in all of ASOIAF so far? Why?
Finding out A Dance with Dragons was coming out this year? No? Meanies.
Fine. Perhaps, when Sansa switched to Alayne. I have a disturbing fondness of "Break the Cutie/Destroying Innocence" moments.

4. In your dream-world, how would you like to see the series end, and why?
A. EVERYONE DIES. Because I would find that mildly hilarious. I'm a horrible, horrible person.

B. (SHIPPER-DREAM WORLD) Jon Snow is son of Lynna Stark and Rhaegar. He marries Arya(or Dany). Sansa marries Sandor, Jamie and Brienne marries. AND THEY ALL LIVE HAPPILY EVER AFTER. Look, I read trashy romance novels on occasion. HUMOR ME.

C. (Realism-dream world) Let's see. Jon Snow stays lord comm. of the Black for a looooooong time. He institutes reforms and what not. He is much beloved and dies at like 115. Dany reclaim Iron Throne. But the kingdom is broken into the seven Kingdoms again. Sandor finds peace, as does Sansa. Preferably together? Still working on this dream world....ask me after Dance with Dragons comes out?

While I was sorely tempted to say Lannister for your ambition and priorities, your selflessness is what made me want to claim you for Targaryen.

And I hear you about Robb's character. He is one of my absolute favorites and while I am certainly more forgiving of his naivete than his father's (he is, after all, a teenager - an excuse Ned Stark didn't have), I want to reach into the book and slap him upside the head and say STOP. WHAT ARE YOU DOING? WHAT. WHAT. WHAT ARE YOU DOING? (in true Sassy Gay Friend style)

Marrying Sansa off to Joffrey? WHAT ARE YOU DOING? WHAT. WHAT. WHAT ARE YOU DOING?

Trusting Littlefinger entirely too much? WHAT ARE YOU DOING? WHAT. WHAT. WHAT ARE YOU DOING?

Kidnapping Tyrion? WHAT ARE YOU DOING? WHAT. WHAT. WHAT ARE YOU DOING?

Ned showing his entire hand to Cersei before the game was through? WHAT ARE YOU DOING? WHAT. WHAT. WHAT ARE YOU DOING?

Nobody listening to Cat when she was right about so many things? WHAT ARE YOU DOING? WHAT. WHAT. WHAT ARE YOU DOING?

Letting Theon go back to the Iron Islands to further explore his daddy issues? WHAT ARE YOU DOING? WHAT. WHAT. WHAT ARE YOU DOING?

I could go on.

I sort of see Varys as Ned's Sassy Gay Friend who was limited by circumstances from being as sassy as he needed to be, really.

In spite of your hatred of warm weather, I see a Martell (which is okay since I'm a Stark who thinks anything below 70 is too cold). You seem very passionate about your interests. You care deeply about knowledge and the people who are important to you. Your fears also remind me of the Martells, especially Arianne.

Definitely Martell. "Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken" sounds a lot like you.

It's a tough call between Lannister, Targaryen, and Martell, but I've got to go Targaryen in the end. Looks like you've got the genius side of that coin! :)

I was going to say Martell initially, but on the second read, you seemed more of a dragon.

Yeah, I can see a lot of Rhoynish influence in you. Martell it is. Go hang with the ladies in Dorne. ;)

Your combination of psychological acuity and blindness to your own faults... and your temper and judgmental, practical streak--I saw Lannister right away. I can see where the Martell votes come from, too, but landed on Lannister because of the strong first impression... and because the reasons you appreciate characters remind me of Tyrion's speech to Jon in GoT. You know--respecting the underdog, those who succeed in spite of something.

I went back and forth a bit between Targ and Martell but eventually settled on Martell.

I see Targaryen, Lannister and Martell here, mostly the former two, but neither is perfect. You give off the Tyrion vibe (lots of us academics do, there are so many grad students sorted Lannister, you wouldn't believe it) quite strongly, so there's that. But you also don't think much of pleasure, which is not really a Lion thing. On the other hand, learning to plan long term, appreciating honesty, fearing failure and dying without a legacy is very Daenerys-like Targaryen.

I think, in the end, I err on the side of the house full of grad students and vote you Lannister.

I was going to go with Tyrell because I get that successful "Growing Strong" vibe from you, then I got to your comment on pleasure which doesn't fit with that house at all. I think I'm leaning more towards Martell than Lannister for you strong stance on women's rights and your balance of caring for those around you and knowledge.

Tough tough tough! Tyrell or Martell or Targaryen? I will say hrmmm oh maybe Targaryen though it was tough and I almost wonder if my brain decided to just solve my 10-minute-and-counting dilemma by flipping a theoretical three-sided coin.

Grrr on misogyny in STEM fields! Mighty fist shake!

With one vote Tully, Greyjoy, & Tyrell and four votes Lannister, it came down to a toss up between Targaryen and Martell. Fourteen votes for Targaryen and you are officially sorted into House Martell with twenty-one votes!
